Roatan is the largest of the islands that make up Las Islas de la Bahia, the Bay Islands of Honduras. Roatan is approximately 35 miles long and three miles wide. Roatan 's International airport is only about a two-hour flight from Houston, New Orleans and Miami and a quick 20-minute flight from the Honduras mainland, which is located about 35 miles away. The steady climate averages in the 80's to 90’s during the day and the 70's in the evening. Normally pleasant trade winds coming in off the Caribbean Sea keep the temperature very comfortable. The people are friendly and warm. The languages spoken are English and Spanish, with many bilingual inhabitants. The government is democratic and stable, offering tax incentives for investors and foreign retirees. The roads are paved and the government has continued to provide for improved infrastructure.

West Bay beach, which is located toward the western tip of Roatan, is the most favored beach due its powdery white sand and the clear blue waters. Here, the second largest reef in the world, which is continuation of the reef extending down from Belize, wraps near to the shore and provides for clear, brilliantly blue water and colorful tropical fish, making it a paradise for snorkelers and divers alike. The lush tropical vegetation in the surrounding hills makes the perfect backdrop to this lovely setting and a wonderful place for walking or hiking. Fishing is also a popular activity here with barracuda and tuna year round and dorado and wahoo from September to February. Roatan is truly that special, unspoiled, idyllic Caribbean island locale that all of us dream about.
